The Museum of Sierra Ski History

The Museum is presented by Sierra Ski Museum LLC, a public benefit organization founded by Stan and Maryann Batiste and David C. Antonucci.
The Lake Tahoe Ski Club, Auburn Ski Club, Sierra Nevada Olympic Winter (SNOW) Museum and private Olympic memorabilia collections from Wendall Broomhall, Martin Hollay, Craig Beck, Dave Newton and so many others have contributed rare artifacts and photos to the displays.
David C. Antonucci, Mark McLaughlin and Eddy Starr Ancinas have graciously allowed us to use materials from their books to help tell the Sierra ski history story. Eddy Starr Ancinas has also helped acquire and display materials further illustrating stories from her book.
Founders
Stan and Maryann Batiste
The Batiste Family Collection is the largest private regional snowsports collection with numerous items currently on display at the Boatworks Mall in Tahoe City.
Stan and Maryann feel that the value of their collection is in getting it back to the people of the Tahoe region in a meaningful way while attempting to tell the grand story of our regional ski sports.
David C. Antonucci
David C. Antonucci has lived in the Lake Tahoe area for over 40 years. A licensed civil engineer with degrees from Cal Poly and Oregon State, he has held senior government positions since 1973 and currently serves on the board of the SNOW Museum.
He is an author and popular speaker on Lake Tahoe’s natural history, Mark Twain’s time at the lake, and the 1960 Olympics. He lives in Tahoe City, CA with his wife and son.
Major Contributors
David C. Antonucci
David C. Antonucci is a civil and environmental engineer and author with 47 years of professional experience in the Lake Tahoe region. He earned his B.S. from California Polytechnic State University and M.S. from Oregon State University.
He served for 7 years as chief of regulation and enforcement for a water quality control board, 20 years as general manager and chief engineer of a multifunction public utility district, and 20 years as a self-employed civil and environmental engineering consultant.
His civic leadership includes the Tahoe Resource Conservation District, the Association of California Water Agencies, the Tahoe Sierra State Parks Foundation, the Sierra Nevada and Olympic Winter (SNOW) Sports Museum, and the Kiwanis Club of North Lake Tahoe.
David is the author of Snowball’s Chance: The Story of the 1960 Olympic Winter Games, Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe, Environmental History of Lake Tahoe, and Geology of the Lake Tahoe Basin. He is currently retired and lives on the Westshore of Lake Tahoe.
Mark McLaughlin
Mark McLaughlin is an award-winning author, historian, and professional speaker specializing in Tahoe Sierra cultural and environmental history. A resident of North Lake Tahoe since 1978, he has written eight books and more than 1,400 articles.
Educated as a cultural geographer and historian at the University of Nevada, Reno, McLaughlin is a five-time recipient of the Nevada State Press Award. For 24 years he authored the award-winning “Weather Window” column for the Sierra Sun in Truckee, and for 25 years he wrote the popular “Sierra Stories” column for Tahoe Weekly magazine. His work has also appeared in Sierra Heritage, Wild West, Nevada, Skiing Heritage, and other regional and national publications.
A frequent media expert, McLaughlin has appeared on CNN, The History Channel, The Weather Channel, the BBC, National Public Radio, and numerous historical documentaries. As a professional speaker, he has delivered more than 1,150 presentations to community groups, schools, and conferences.
McLaughlin is a charter member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Sierra College Press and a contributor to Sierra College’s Sierra Nevada Virtual Museum. He teaches Sierra Nevada history through entertaining storytelling, dynamic presentations, and informative tours.
